Poultry Farm Suspended Due to Environmental Violations in Panama

Panama's Ministry of the Environment has suspended a poultry farm for 30 days due to inadequate waste disposal and strong odors affecting the community. The company has been given a deadline to correct the violations.

Poultry Farm Suspended Due to Environmental Violations in Panama

The Ministry of the Environment (MiAmbiente) ordered the suspension for 30 days of a poultry farm located in El Cañaveral, Santa María, Coclé, after it was found that they were not complying with established environmental regulations. Neighbors from nearby communities had long been complaining: the strong and unpleasant odors coming from the place were unbearable, and finally, the complaints were heard. During the inspection, MiAmbiente detected that the farm did not have an adequate system for the final disposal of dead birds, something basic for this type of operation. John Jairo Trujillo, provincial director, emphasized that the company must have pits for burial and that they will also have to adapt the shed where they store the waste. The order is clear: they have 30 days to comply with the corrections and adjust everything to the Environmental Management Plan (PAMA). If they do not comply or if the environmental damage is assessed as greater, the case could go to the central office, where the fine could exceed $10,000.
